$3.1 million awarded to Iowa communities for infrastructure projects

March 9, 2018 (Des Moines, IA) – Awards totaling $3.1 million were announced today for nine communities across the state. The Iowa Economic Development Authority (IEDA) awarded Community Development Block Grant (CDBG) funds to support community water and sewer infrastructure projects.

IEDA received 15 applications totaling $5.5 million in funding requests. Grants are awarded based on benefit to low- and moderate-income persons, financial need, project impact and readiness, and commitment of local resources to the project.

“CDBG funding has been instrumental in helping Iowa communities statewide to improve infrastructure and economic opportunities,” said IEDA Director Debi Durham. “We are pleased that these communities will be able to leverage these federal funds to spur development and enhance quality of life.” CDBG funds enable communities to make needed improvements to water and sewer systems, improve housing conditions for low-income homeowners, provide facilities for disabled and at-risk individuals and make transformative improvements to its downtowns.

The CDBG program is federally funded through the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development. IEDA is responsible for administering CDBG funds in non-metropolitan areas of the state.
