Nearly $700,000 in CAT grants awarded to projects in three Iowa communities
April 10, 2019?(Des Moines)?– The Enhance Iowa Board awarded $675,000 in Community Attraction and Tourism (CAT) grants to a YMCA in Davenport, public garden in Des Moines and a city park in Milford. The awards were approved at today’s meeting in Urbandale.
The following projects were approved for grants awarded from the Community Attraction and Tourism (CAT) Fund:
Project Name: Downtown Davenport YMCA, Davenport
Total Project Cost: $20,221,264
Amount Awarded: $500,000
Project Description: The project will include construction of a 70,000-square-foot facility overlooking downtown and the Mississippi River. The YMCA will have 20,000 square feet of fitness space and an aquatic center with a family recreation pool, lap pool, whirlpool therapy and steam and sauna space. The facility will have additional amenities such as: spinning studios, a full-size gymnasium, meeting and multi-purpose rooms, child watch/kid adventure space, adult and family locker rooms and licensed space for summer youth camp.
Project Name: Asian Garden Enhancement, Des Moines
Total Project Cost: $702,500
Amount Awarded: $92,500
Project Description: This project will enhance the Robert D. Ray Asian Garden by simplifying water features, creating new trail connections and adding site lighting and other security improvements. New garden features will be more representative of all Asian cultures, and the expanded landscaping elements will make for a more engaging experience for visitors.
Project Name: Millstone Park, Milford
Total Project Cost: $412,971
Amount Awarded: $82,500
Project Description: This project includes the construction of a city park with a historical monument that will serve as the gateway to the Iowa Great Lakes area.
The Enhance Iowa Program provides financial incentives to communities for the construction of recreational, cultural, educational or entertainment facilities that enhance the quality of life in Iowa. To date, 49 CAT awards have been granted by the board, totaling $15,412,104. The next Enhance Iowa Board meeting is scheduled for May 8, 2019, in Urbandale.
