Downtown Gem
The iconic Hotel Manning is located in downtown Keosauqua, Iowa. Built in 1899, Hotel Manning’s steamboat gothic architecture is reminiscent of riverboats of the 1800s, a style enhanced by the hotel’s location along the banks of the Des Moines River.
On April 2, 2018, the local community came together as The Hotel Manning Preservation Group to buy the hotel and restore Keosauqua’s well-known landmark. The Hotel Manning Preservation Group is made up of over 80 individuals who invested $5,000 each to purchase and save the hotel. IEDA’s Community Catalyst Grant Program and Historic Tax Credits were utilized to finance the project as well as a financial partnership with First Iowa State Bank.
The hotel now caters to tourists, hunters, and sport fishers. It has been restored to appear much as it did at the turn of the 20th century with the lobby and guest rooms filled with period antiques. Across the courtyard is the Standard Motel, a 1960s-era addition, while next door the Riverview Inn, built in 1993, offers more modern rooms.
The Hotel Manning is also the cultural hub for Keosauqua, hosting live music and art exhibits throughout the year. It has reinvented itself as the social spot with community events, such as wedding receptions, bridal and baby showers, company parties, family reunions and more.
